Closet Goth. Myth? Maybe. Legend? Definitely. Closet Goth was once a solo project, and still kind of is one, but in a significantly different form. Live shows vary from nightcore to reverse nightcore. Sometimes the band has no instruments, resorting to just vocals and the coolest dancers in all of Arizona. One thing remains throughout any iteration of Closet Goth: fun. “Sick guitar tones, dude,” says at least one person after each show. “Thank you,” Col says, putting away their instrument. The person walks away, star struck by the interaction with Arizona’s only no-wave artist. Col touches their face in nervousness. Their legs hurt from dancing too much. They go home, they sleep, they watch wrestling, they write, they sleep some more, they watch more wrestling, they do too much math, they record an album. What is this album? Friendship Village is this album. Friendship Village is 5 years of songwriting wrapped in a floral sleeve. Friendship Village is the reason Tucson is going to be the next Portland. Friendship Village is not only the voice of a tiny group of pissed-off-but-in-a-fun-way people, but tis the voice of excellence. Closet Goth is neglecting to study for their exams tomorrow. Why? Because rock n roll never dies, and post-punk never sleeps. (Please disregard prior mentions of Col sleeping).
